Our “Corruption, Originally” site has a search engine — thanks to Tumby.me

lessig:

Big thanks to Tumby.me for building a search engine for our “Corruption, Originally” site — remember, the Tumblr site with all the framing references to the term “corruption,” which establishes at a minimum that the Framers meant more by “corruption” than “quid pro quo” corruption. I’m grateful for the pro bono help, and excited about the technology.

We’re delighted to be part of this groundbreaking effort—the first time a Tumblr has been used in a Supreme Court filing. Here’s another one of our innovations. That’s tumbyHover in action below giving context to this post from Larry’s Tumblr from his other blog. How? Simply hover over the link. Lots more in there too. Give it a whirl.

The End Of The Power User

shortformblog:

Mention in this BuzzFeed piece about the plight of the developer of Tumby:

Twitter’s maturation came and went, and it’s hard to find people still angry about it; resignation, or begrudging understanding, are more common emotions. But currently, Tumblr developers are going through a similar experience. The company, from their perspective, is piggybacking on their work and then shutting them out. Last month, one user by the name of Unwrapping Tumblr noted that a design change to the avatar menu on Tumblr’s dashboard bore more than a casual resemblance to another third-party developer’s tool called Tumby: “You know, not to raise any concerns, but this looks an awful lot like what Tumby’s Chrome extension does.” To which another popular Tumblr user sarcastically replied, “Tumblr lifting features from a ‘browser hack’? No. Say it ain’t so! I don’t believe it!”

Tumby founder Robert Buckley notes that despite attempts, no substantive relationship has evolved between the two companies. “We never needed any technical help to build our stuff, so no harm there. On the other hand, Tumblr’s business side has been uninterested with what we’re doing. That’s surprising and disappointing,” he said. “Worse, they’ve either ignored or rebuffed our every attempt to reach out and establish a dialogue intended to explore and form the right kind of mutually beneficial relationship. We’ve acquired lots of valuable Tumblr domain expertise and insight that we want to and we’d be delighted to share — no takers at Tumblr. That indifference means missed opportunity that harms us and harms them.”

Social networks should be more accepting of third-party plugins.

Here’s tumbyHover in action providing some context to the BuzzFeed article itself.

Avatar Menu Change on Tumblr Dashboard:
Tumblr is gradually rolling out a change to the avatar menu on the desktop dashboard. Now when you place you cursor over an avatar, Tumblr reveals three sample posts and the username with blog title. There are also separate items for the “Ask a question/Send fan mail” drop-down menu and the follow/unfollow button.

Aug. 20, 2013 Update: This change also extends to any usernames (author and reblogger) in the upper left of the post.

You know, not to raise any concerns, but this looks an awful lot like what Tumby’s Chrome extension does. Here’s an example from the dashboard:

The plugin’s been around for a little bit—I posted about it a few weeks ago. While it’s not exactly the same, the approach is pretty similar.

Hmmmm.

Tumblr Image Resize Trick

You can get five sizes of the same image by simply modifying its URL once its uploaded to Tumblr. This seems to work on all published Tumblr images. Cool.

For this example we start with the URL:

The trick is to change the text after the underscore. We start with “1280”.

Remember, a simple right click on the image allows multiple options to work with the image in most browsers

image
This uses “1280” but is scaled to fit into largest available width for your theme.

image
Changed to “500”.

image
Changed to “400”.

image
Changed to “250”.

image
Changed to “75sq”.

Notice this was automatically cropped for a different aspect ratio.

Of course, you can use these image URLs to include the images in other Tumblr posts, non-Tumblr web pages, or documents too.
